Multiplayer functionality has finally made its way into The Last of Us Part 2. Sadly, it isn’t Sony behind the move—an inventive modder is instead responsible for releasing a fresh video that captures some brutal one-on-one encounters.
Designed by Specilizer, a creator best known for producing modifications for The Last of Us Part 2, this multiplayer build is planned to go live in September. The project includes a lobby setup, with matches running on both a user-made arena and a location taken directly from the game’s storyline.
In the works since January of this year, the mod was shaped by the cancellation of The Last of Us Online. According to reports, that effort was around 80 percent complete when it was stopped, and it had already attracted an early community. Many of those players were fans of the original Last of Us multiplayer mode. Even former PlayStation president Shuhei Yoshida acknowledged the potential of the project—though, in the end, it never got the chance to proceed.
If you want to follow how this multiplayer modification came together, you can find a set of devlog-style videos on Specilizer’s YouTube channel. They provide a closer look at the driving ideas and the approach taken throughout the build. It’s been a long road to reach this point, but seeing it nearly ready to play is genuinely impressive.
For those who never tried multiplayer in the original Last of Us, that mode offered a standout standalone experience, and it fit surprisingly well within the structure of the original game. If you’re curious and have a PC that can run its sequel, this multiplayer mod could be an excellent way to revisit that style later this year.
