Brendan “PlayerUnknown” Greene “moves forward with a smaller team”, as Prologue: Go Wayback! studio struggles to find funding

Brendan “PlayerUnknown” Greene, the creator of PUBG and Prologue: Go Wayback!, has publicly shared his thanks with the team at PlayerUnknown Productions for their “professionalism” as they “progress” with a leaner staff after running into difficulties when trying to secure extra funding.

In a more detailed message posted on Twitter/X, Greene said that the decision to shrink PlayerUnknown Productions’ team “was not a simple choice” and noted that being able to “keep the studio’s operations running independently […] is a privilege few developers get to experience when they step out on their own”.

“The industry has been dealing with challenges for quite some time, and we’re not the only ones facing funding problems,” Greene wrote. “I’m grateful that I had the chance to keep the studio running independently, and I understand fully how rare that privilege is for most developers when they choose to work for themselves. I was able to sustain it only for a limited period, and now we have to move forward with fewer people while finding the right partners for the project.”

“I’d like to thank my team at PlayerUnknown Productions for their professionalism. This decision wasn’t easy. Still, even with the hurdles and uncertainty we faced over the past year, their work made me appreciate the exceptional studio environment we built together. The game we made is now in the hands of everyone. I’m genuinely proud of what our team accomplished, and I truly wish we could have finished the journey we began as a group.”

Greene went on to say that he hopes players will enjoy “the wilderness” of his newest project, Prologue: Go Wayback!, now that it has been released for free, and he thanked the community for their “creativity, passion, and enjoyment of the worlds we’ve crafted”.
