Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 just received its first significant patch in nearly a decade on Steam, but it appears to have broken more than it fixed

Capcom appears to be in full “surprise patch” mode lately. After last week’s return to Dragon’s Dogma 2—an older release from two years ago—to get everything ready for its Dark Arisen expansion, the PC edition of 2011’s Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 has now also gotten its first major update in years. Still, it looks like the change has created more headaches than it has fixed.

This recent update for Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is the first to provide official Steam patch notes since 2017, though the information is limited. Capcom says the newest build includes “confirmed compatibility with Windows 11” and “various bug fixes,” which is encouraging at face value. Unfortunately, the update has instead broken Jean Grey’s Dark Phoenix ability in a major way.

“As users have discovered, Dark Phoenix no longer activates,” one Reddit contributor noted, “but other existing issues like Frank’s zombie plungers remain unresolved.” Another community member added that prior to Capcom’s update, Grey “essentially [had] no health, so her entire strategy relied on accumulating five meter stocks and dying, which would trigger a powered-up Dark Phoenix state, the strongest character in the game.” Now, however, “she simply dies instead of transforming.”

There are also other significant shifts, including a change that prevents players from using the ‘Kubota escape’—a move that originally showed up as an unintended “bug,” but was later embraced by the community. On top of that, Capcom’s update has reportedly disrupted a wide range of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 mods that fans have put together over the years since the publisher last refreshed the game.

Capcom hasn’t issued any statement about the update so far, but players are already looking for a hotfix.
