Black Myth: Wukong has “achieved results beyond our expectations”, says developer, as sales reportedly pass a colossal milestone

The action RPG Black Myth: Wukong made a stunning splash when it arrived in 2024. On Steam, it recorded the highest-ever concurrent peak player count for any single-player release, and on launch day it also became the most watched title across Chinese live-streaming platforms. After that, Game Science— the studio behind the Chinese-mythology action RPG—said it had already cleared more than 10 million sales within just four days of release.

Later, Black Myth: Wukong earned a nomination for Game of the Year at the 2024 Game Awards, even though it ultimately fell short to PlayStation platformer Astro Bot. It’s also been widely seen as the spark behind a fresh wave of big-budget Chinese console and PC games in recent years. Still, nearly two years after its launch and record-breaking debut, where does it stand today in both popularity and sales?

A recent update from the political-executive organization Central Committee of the Communist Youth League of China (CYL) claims that Black Myth: Wukong has now passed the 30 million mark in copies sold. If accurate, that would place it just behind CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077, which sold 35 million copies after its 2020 launch by last November. Around the same time, FromSoftware announced last April that Elden Ring had shipped more than 30 million copies worldwide since it released three years earlier. So, if the CYL’s figure of over 30 million sales holds up, Black Myth: Wukong would be leading both Cyberpunk 2077 and Elden Ring—an impressive outcome, to say the least.

I contacted Game Science, the developer of Black Myth: Wukong, to confirm the reported 30 million sales figure. They did not share additional exact numbers, but said the game had “achieved results beyond our expectations”.

In a detailed statement provided to Eurogamer, Game Science said: “Currently, we don’t have any new sales figures to announce beyond our previously reported milestone of over 10 million copies sold across all platforms within four days of launch. What we can assert is that Black Myth: Wukong has exceeded our expectations in both domestic and international markets, and we are immensely thankful for the enthusiasm and backing from players around the globe.”

“It has been truly rewarding to watch the game continue to resonate with audiences worldwide, and we’re deeply grateful to the community and media partners who have supported the title since launch.”

Game Science is currently working on the next entry in its Black Myth series. Announced during Gamescom last year, Black Myth: Zhong Kui focuses on the mythological deity at the center of the story— a spirit-capturing figure who moves between hell and earth. While it isn’t positioned as a direct sequel, it remains another single-player action RPG built on Chinese mythology.

No release date has been shared for Black Myth: Zhong Kui yet, though it is slated for PC and “mainstream console platforms”.
