Classes and covens in Witchspire are the first choice you’ll make when picking your faction. These decisions set your opening weapon and the color look of your character’s outfit, though they don’t meaningfully alter how the game plays overall. Just keep in mind that once you select a coven, you can’t switch to a different one (unless you start a brand-new character), so it’s worth making up your mind before you dive in.
To make that step easier, here’s my walkthrough to every Witchspire class and coven, plus a breakdown of what separates them.
Explanation of Witchspire Classes and Covens
Before getting into anything else, one key detail should be clarified: covens are not classes in Witchspire, according to the developer – Envar Games – in a blog post.
In practical terms, choosing a coven in Witchspire doesn’t change your gameplay or overall playstyle in the same way a class choice would. Instead, your coven selection determines your starting weapon—either a Wand or a Spellblade—and also sets the color palette for your character’s outfit. The same blog post mentioned that covens would include distinctive passive advantages, but at the time of writing, Envar Games has said on its Discord that these aren’t built into the game yet.
After that, it’s up to you to decide how you want to build and play your character. If those passive benefits are added later, they could influence how you experience the game, but for now it seems you may safely ignore them if that’s your preference. Only time will tell. Likewise, even if your chosen coven leads you to begin with a Spellblade, that doesn’t stop you from using a Wand too—and the reverse is also true. Before long, you’ll pick up stronger Spellblades and Wands no matter which starting option you choose!
Still, remember that after creating your character in Witchspire, there’s no way to switch covens unless you begin again from scratch—so choose carefully.
With that out of the way, let’s go through each of the six covens in Witchspire and what they bring to the table:
The Cloudpiercers
- Starting Weapon: Apprentice Cloudpiercer Spellblade
- Elemental Affinity: Lux
The Cloudpiercers are praised for their bravery and for challenging established ideas and expectations, carrying themselves with a noticeable sense of optimism. Their clothing leans into comforting tones, with browns, oranges, and golds playing a prominent role.
The Starsmiths
- Starting Weapon: Apprentice Starsmith Spellblade
- Elemental Affinity: Crystal
The Starsmiths are recognized for their confident attitude and genuine hearts, and they shine as creators of both magical items and structures. Their outfits are filled with bold shades of purple and lavender, which makes them easy to spot compared to the other covens.
The Foretellers
- Starting Weapon: Apprentice Foreteller Spellblade
- Elemental Affinity: Ethereal
The Foretellers can peer ahead into the future, picking up guidance from even the smallest everyday events. Their intentions may appear honorable, though they’re often mistaken for omens of bad luck. Their look features deep purples and gentle blues, and it’s likely one of my favorite color combinations.
The Wildroots
- Starting Weapon: Apprentice Wildroot Wand
- Elemental Affinity: Nature
The Wildroots have a strong devotion to all living things, which is why they’re tied to Nature. They come across as caring, yet they also have a fiery drive, and their attire mixes greens, browns, and maroon to reinforce their grounded, earthy identity.
The Tomekeepers
- Starting Weapon: Apprentice Tomekeeper Wand
- Elemental Affinity: Nox
The Tomekeepers focus on dark magic, matching their elemental affinity of Nox. They spend their time combing through ancient manuscripts in search of forgotten knowledge, gathering as a secretive group drawn to old civilizations and lost forms of magic. Their outfits blend deep blues with bright pinks.
The Nightscribes
- Initial Weapon: Apprentice Nightscribe Wand
- Elemental Affinity: Astral
Finally, The Nightscribes are known for their obsession with the stars and their mysterious, keep-to-themselves presence. You can often find them hauling a mix of textbooks, telescopes, and scrolls. Their clothing leans into striking purple shades blended with gentle pink accents, which is why I consider them one of my favorite coven color combinations.
Which coven to select in Witchspire?
As shown above, the covens don’t really differ in any major way besides your first weapon choice and the color palette. There are also multiple Elemental affinities that could influence how you pick your weapon, though for now they don’t seem to make much of a difference during gameplay.
Keeping that in mind—and remembering that you can adjust your starting weapon after completing a handful of key quests (you’ll soon discover fresh weapon recipes or come across them while looting)—I recommend starting with a class whose colors you genuinely enjoy. In the end, that’s the one part you’ll be stuck with for the duration of your current playthrough!
